Laguna wines – The lightness of being in Istria

The grape vine has been cultivated in Istria since the antiquity

The superlatives that describe Istria begin with its outstanding geographic features: the most northerly of the Mediterranean peninsulas seems almost designed for viticulture and winemaking. The Laguna Wines vineyards have been selected and organised to emphasise these boons. On the positions of the Poreč region long rows of grape vines rise from the coast to the hilly plateaus. The red soils, Terra Rossa, are closer to the sea, while the white soils, the Terra Bianca, are predominant on the higher elevations, each with its characteristic mineral wealth. At these positions the ancient indigenous Istrian varieties are harmoniously mingled with select classic wine grape varieties. What they share is the imprint of the Istrian soil, climate and viticulture traditions that stretch back into the antiquity. History and myth tell of brave mariners who, in the period before Christ, brought from their shores to Istria that which they valued most – the grape vine.

The Vina Laguna vineyards are founded in the millennial tradition of winemaking in Istria, but also incorporate the latest insights in viticulture. Stunning positions with belvederes have become a favoured destination for wine lovers from the country and around the world, a perfect place to experience the lightness of being that radiates from Laguna Wines (Vina Laguna).

Vina Laguna Malvasia is a wine that truly defines the lightness of being in Istria. Here, where Alpine and Mediterranean climes blend in harmony, is the home of the Malvasia Istriana grape variety, also present along the Italian border.

Many clones of this variety are cultivated, especially in the Mediterranean, but here, on the northernmost Adriatic peninsula, Malvasia is at its pinnacle: clear, bright, fresh and fragrant. On this fertile peninsula where the tradition of the grape wine stretches back farther than memory, the best red wines come from the red soil. From our red soil, the soul of Istrian winemaking, flows our Vina Laguna Terra Rossa – a light, smooth and balanced wine. Three grape varieties are harmoniously joined to reveal all the vitality and serenity of red Istria. The Teran (Terrano) variety brings freshness and the unmistakable note of Istria, Borgonja (Gamay) brings mineral and floral notes, while Merlot offers a softer, fruity profile. Terra Rossa is a daily complement to good food and good company.
